False Oil-Beetle

Surely the muscle-man of the insect world? Look at those thighs: this guy really works out!
The lady Oedemera nobilis does not sport such bulging appendages, but the elytra don't quite meet in the middle either, just like the male.
So what do you reckon the evolutionary mechanisms were to result in such a fancy creature?
